Across India, thousands of children grow up on the streets, where survival becomes their daily priority. Without access to stable homes or consistent support systems, these children are forced to take on responsibilities far beyond their age—working tirelessly just to secure basic necessities like food, clothing, and shelter.
Instead of classrooms and playgrounds, their childhood is shaped by uncertainty, vulnerability, and labor. While they demonstrate remarkable resilience, the cost is immense—lost education, compromised health, and limited opportunities for a better future.
The Reality of Child Labour on the Streets
Street-connected children often engage in multiple forms of work to sustain themselves:
1. Hazardous Labour
Many children are employed in unsafe environments such as small-scale factories, roadside workshops, eateries, or warehouses. Long working hours, exposure to harmful substances, and physically demanding tasks take a toll on their physical and mental well-being. Despite their efforts, they are often underpaid and unprotected.
2. Rag-Picking and Waste Collection
A common sight in urban India is children collecting recyclable waste from streets, garbage dumps, and landfills. Carrying heavy sacks, they sort through hazardous materials without any safety equipment. This exposes them to infections, injuries, and long-term health risks.
3. Informal and Daily Wage Jobs
From cleaning and delivering goods to selling small items on the streets, many children rely on irregular, low-paying work. These jobs offer no security and keep them trapped in a cycle of daily survival.
4. Load Carrying and Porter Work
At markets, railway stations, and transport hubs, children are often seen lifting and transporting heavy goods. Such physically intensive work at a young age can lead to chronic health issues and injuries.
The Missing Piece: Education
While these children work hard to survive, what they truly lack is access to education—the most powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty.
According to various national estimates, millions of children in India are still out of school, with street children forming a significant portion of this number. Without education:
